About the work
Isabel in the Garden of Stars
A soft bossa nova inspired by Kyoto, childhood wonder and the beauty of growing between cultures.
“Isabel in the Garden of Stars” is one of the most tender songs I have ever written.
It was born from love — the quiet, luminous love of a grandfather watching his granddaughter grow across oceans. Isabel has Galician roots through her father, Filipino warmth through her mother, and she is growing up surrounded by the serene beauty of Kyoto, Japan. Through the photos and videos her parents have shared over the years, I have seen her curiosity, her joy, her sensitivity to color, light and nature.
This song is my musical garden for her.
From the bamboo paths of Arashiyama to the thousand vermilion gates of Fushimi Inari, from the golden reflections of Kinkaku-ji to the silent stones of Ryoan-ji, each verse follows her footsteps — playful, bright, and full of wonder.
Musically, the piece blends soft bossa nova with gentle world music textures: acoustic guitar, cavaquinho sparkle, light percussion, upright bass and subtle jazz trumpet touches — a warm, affectionate soundscape that mirrors childhood innocence and multicultural beauty.
“Isabel, garden of stars —
Galicia, Philippines, Japan.”
This is a song about heritage, imagination, and the poetry of growing up between worlds.
