The curse of the submerged village

About the work

In the year 2026, Ann, a woman in her thirties, is involved in a serious car accident on a secondary road near Boston. When she wakes up in the hospital, she learns that she has been missing for eight months, that she has given birth by emergency cesarean section, and that she has no memory of that period. Her partner, Bob, as well as Dan and Celia, the couple with whom she was supposed to travel, remain missing. Ann suffers from amnesia associated with a cranial trauma and a prolonged traumatic experience. The police investigate her case without reaching any conclusive results.
After being discharged, Ann moves into her parents’ house together with her son, Bobby. From the very beginning, the child displays physical traits and behavioral patterns that are incompatible with his age. As Bobby grows, Ann notices increasingly disturbing behaviors, disproportionate reactions from animals in his presence, and a physical development that accentuates his difference from other children.
Years later, Ann encounters three severely deformed street musicians. The music they play triggers the sudden recovery of her blocked memories. Before the police, Ann recounts the events that took place during the trip to the lake.
Months earlier, Ann and Bob had accepted an invitation from Dan and Celia to go on a trip to Lake Umbagog, a remote lake beneath whose waters lies a submerged town. Despite warnings about contamination and restricted access, the group enters the area. During their stay, personal tensions emerge, particularly between Bob and Celia, who had previously been involved in a relationship.
During several dives, the group discovers remains of the submerged town, religious objects, and an original copy of Paradise Lost by John Milton dedicated to the town’s former inhabitants. Bob explains that the town had been inhabited by a dissident religious sect that worshipped the figure of the fallen angel and practiced extreme rituals. During a second dive, Dan disappears and is later found dead underwater.
After resurfacing, Ann, Bob, and Celia discover that their vehicle has been stolen. Bob heads toward a nearby cabin to seek help and discovers a community of deformed human beings, descendants of the former inhabitants of the submerged town. He is discovered, pursued, and eventually captured and killed.
Ann and Celia manage to escape temporarily but decide to return in an attempt to rescue Bob. They find his body and are attacked by the community. Ann manages to flee in the vehicle, while Celia is left behind. It is later revealed that Ann was held captive by this community for months, gave birth while in captivity, and eventually escaped, although without conscious memory of the events.
In the present, Bobby returns alone to Lake Umbagog. There, he is received by the descendants of the submerged town, who recognize and venerate him as a sacred figure, heir to their lineage and the new god of the community, bringing to a close the cycle that began beneath the waters of the lake.
