About the work

Composer: Maria K. Lazaridou — Orchestral work with four-part mixed choir, Op.42 “Whistling… II”

Whistling... II for orchestra and four-part mixed choir is a timbral, descriptive work. Its
inspiration came from the tragic collision of two trains, which resulted in the death of more
than 57 individuals. The title has a double meaning; it refers to the sound that trains make
when they whistle, and at the same time to the apparent indifference that seems to
characterize the modern people based on their reactions and actions on humanitarian and
social issues.
The work consists of five distinct but continuous parts. The first part, entitled by
accident and by choice, presents the surrounding space, while at the same time creating an
awakening of the listener through intense dynamic contrasts. In the second, and intensely
rhythmic part, entitled premonition, tension, and anticipation are evoked by means of
timbral effects. In the third part, entitled crash test, which is the climax of the work, both
the musicians and the choristers are pushed to the extreme, dynamically and technically,
conveying the tragedy of the event, the pain, but also a reasonable rage. The fourth
movement, entitled fragments, depicts panic and chaos. Finally, in the fifth part, entitled
dematerialization, situations transcend perception, endurance, and nature itself;
nothingness is realized; matter changes form and dimension; man is dematerialized.
