Synopsis:
BlueCity is a multi-narrative story set in Madrid, mainly in the neighborhoods of Malasaña and Lavapiés, narrated by a street poet who recites poems to passersby in exchange for a few coins. His verses weave together the different stories that make up the film, serving as both a connecting thread and the city’s collective conscience.
Each story begins with the arrival of a new season—spring, summer, autumn, and winter—forming a metaphor for the cycle of life and human transformation. Madrid, ever-changing and alive, becomes a character in itself, portrayed with a visual and narrative tone reminiscent of Italian neorealism: an imperfect, poetic, and brutally honest city.
The stories take place twenty years before the poet’s narration (in 2005) and intertwine simultaneously, alternating between characters and timelines, showing how each person’s decisions affect the others. Some characters reappear in different storylines, drastically changed in attitude or appearance, leaving the viewer wondering what transformed them.
The fire that breaks out at the end of spring is the central event that connects all the stories. It acts as both an emotional and physical catalyst—marking a before and after, conditioning the following seasons and deeply shaping each character’s fate.
