About the work
Jonah, a 22-year-old surfer from Northern California, hits rock bottom after his girlfriend leaves him for a flashy pro-surfer. Disillusioned and broke, he heads south in his van and lands a job teaching surf at a run-down surf school in Encinitas, near the Mexican border.
What starts as a new beginning filled with sunsets, weed, festivals, hook-ups and tribal beats, slowly spirals into something much more complex. Jonah is caught between two women: Lila, the free-spirited but manipulative sister of the surf school owner, and Maya, a traumatized mexican refugee who crossed the border hidden in a van and now hides from traffickers.
Drawn in by Rick, a washed-up surf legend turned opiate addict, Jonah agrees to a series of “small favors” that spiral into drug smuggling, illegal crossings, and deep moral compromises. What was meant to be a fresh start becomes a descent into the blurred lines between right and wrong, love and lust, freedom and complicity.
Jonah must decide: Will he ride the wave, or be crushed beneath it?
