About the work

He used to run every day.
Why would today be any different?

Dawn was breaking,
his wife gave him that empty stare—
as if he wasn’t there.

At the table, time for breakfast came,
but the whole family
watched him fast without a name.

Were they angry?
Had they forgiven?

No…
(He didn’t exist.)

They just kept livin’.

An he is depressed!

Even the dog
he always used to walk—
no bark, no wag,
not even a glance or talk.

His heart,
its beat no longer made a sound.
Was he just down?

Maybe.

No more love around.

AND HE IS DEPRESSED!

He went for a run,
but nothing
seemed to change or turn.

That speeding bike—
didn’t even slow.

“Are you stupid?!
You almost hit me, don’t you know?!”

Crossing the street,
What’s wrong with them today?
Can’t they see I’m in the way?

And the cars don’t stop—
he could swear
that he’s just not there…

The bike lane,
do dogs move aside?
No.
The people walk through him—
are they blind?

And he’s still hurting,
just skin and bones,
a soul deserted,
bet life has never
felt this alone.

He heads back home.
His wife is crying.
They look at his photo.
The kids are silent…
and that’s when he sees—

They can’t see him…

He’s ceased to be.
