About the work
Villains' Reunion, an 85,000 word book
Logline
On the run from a secret criminal organization that she grew up in, a young woman suppresses or revises events that she and her brother endured, and when she falls in love with an affable and innocent tourist, breaking the siblings’ vow of not falling in love, her brother suggests they retrieve a stolen family portrait using the tourist to infiltrate the reunion of the criminals, but returning will force her to confront everything she thought she had escaped, possibly separating her and her boyfriend forever.
Book Cover Summary
Matilde and her brother, Rui, race to the train leaving Lagos, Portugal. Evading a secret criminal organization known as The 30, whose leader, Tiago, killed their parents, former leaders themselves. Onto the train steps Wes, an affable and equally young American tourist.
During that fateful train to Lisbon and onto Aveiro, a city known for its colorful moliceiros, Matilde eavesdrops as Wes explains what led him to Portugal – and how he was jilted on his wedding day. Matilde wondered if she’d ever get married. A crazy idea occurs to her. What if with Wes?
At the station in Aveiro, Rui pretends to give Wes directions, but instead makes a monumental mistake by pick-pocketing him. Pictures of the elusive siblings cross the desk of Interpol Section Director Alva O’Rourke in Lisbon. Alva, on the verge of retirement, is alone in clinging to a decades-long theory that The 30 exists. Taking down The 30 would be her vindication.
On a side-street, Matilde sizes up a cafe with a ‘help wanted’ sign. Here, she promised herself, she would reinvent herself. Leave her criminal past behind. She steps up to the counter, and upon meeting the owner’s gaze, gives an alias.
