About the work
Bob lives, under a false identity, in a house on the outskirts of San Diego. He has rented the house to Linda, a young veterinarian, whom he pays in cash. Months earlier, Bob was the sole survivor of a bank robbery in Los Angeles, but instead of giving the money to his boss, he kept it for himself. Bob receives a tip-off that a man is looking for him. Bob tracks him down and kills him. The Sheriff, Linda's old boyfriend, takes it upon himself to investigate the case. Bob begins to fall in love with Linda, from whom he has hidden his criminal past. Two new men, sent again by his old boss, track Bob down. Bob kills them too but is shot. Bob goes to Linda's house to be cured. Linda makes it a condition that he tells her the truth about his past. Bob agrees. The Sheriff concludes that Bob is the one who kept the money from the robbery and goes to Linda's house to get information about her tenant. His idea is to kill Bob and keep his money. The Sheriff discovers Bob there, who is freshly operated on for the gunshot wound. To Linda's horror, Bob manages to kill the Sheriff with a point-blank shot. Bob, knowing that the Sheriff's death means a breakup with Linda, gives her half of his money, and flees to Mexico. There he devotes himself to writing a novel, which had always been his secret hobby. Once finished, a man from his old boss tracks him down and kills him. Days later, Linda receives the manuscript of the novel, which is dedicated to her. It tells the story of Bob's life, but the ending is different: Bob and Linda flee to Mexico and live happily in love in a cabin by the sea.
