About the work
After the yearly Rendezvous was cancelled, Rusty Steel and his people realized their way of life as cold-water beaver trappers had ended. They find themselves forced to seek a new trade. At the time, sixty million buffalo roamed the plains, which presented a golden opportunity to make money. Every part of the buffalo, from the hide and tongue to the hooves and bones, could be sold for four dollars each. It seemed like a sure way to make a living.
However, there was a problem. The local Indians believed that the bison were sacred animals and belonged to them. They were put on earth by their god to provide the Indian Nations with an unending supply of food, clothing, tools, and shelter. The bison were an integral part of the Plains Indians’ lives, and their spirits claimed that the buffalo would be there long after man vanished from the face of the earth.
Rusty Steel and Levi Johnson led their clan from the Rocky Mountain compound far away to the highest valleys in the range, hoping to find a new country never seen by white men. They sought the herds that nobody claimed. It was time for them to hone their skills in their new profession and test the waters for danger.
