About the work
When a shadowy figure comes to intentionally start a fire in the prosperous but precarious settlement of Twin Springs, in the boondocks, at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, everybody pitches in to help and put out the flames. As they attempt to save their town from burning and disappearing like most endeavors to homestead in this part of the Indian territories, an eviler force with a much larger plan is behind the arsonist.
It is 1824, and unbeknown to James Adam Grizz, Brick Hammer, and Jimmy White Bear, the Arapaho have arrived in the valley in large numbers to push the Ute Indians out and claim the best hunting grounds for hundreds of miles for their own. They also plan to kill every white man living nearby and destroy the settlement in their process to stop the Eastern and European trappers and buffalo hunters from taking what they now consider their game and livelihood. When the trouble started, the mountain men were there to assist.
Measles and whooping cough epidemics hit the Blackfeet Nation, and the deadly sicknesses ran through the tribe. Half of their people and the Gros Ventre are wiped out, leaving them harmless against the new encroachers. They retreat as they deal with the invisible white man’s sicknesses among their ranks. This gave the invaders a clear path to victory and assumed all those who stood in their way would die. But not if Hammer and Grizz have anything to do with it.
