About the work
Mountain men Rusty Steel and Angus McFarlin head out to trap beaver in secret streams at the extreme end of the mountain range—a place they hadn’t visited for a decade. Envy nibbles at the aging men, so they decide to prove their worth before their apprentices Levi Johnson and Will Forrester. They go on a trapping expedition in search of the best cold-water beaver with their dense, expensive pelts like they did back in the day when they too were young.
As a massive blizzard hits them high in the Rocky Mountains, they get caught without shelter, and begin a life-and-death struggle with Mother Nature. Signs of possible hostile Indians tracks further their despair. Do they have new enemies besides the frigid cold? What Native Americans were so brave they dare hunt white men in such weather?
Back in the compound, the confinement to the cabins has sparks flying between Betty Forrester and Levi’s wife, the woman Crow War Chief Dahteste. All the while, their new husbands struggle to keep their wives from falling off the deep end and becoming violent. Bettey is Davy Crocket’s niece and she’s no piece of cake, so the tensions rise as both women refuse to back down.
