About the work

Burn-out is mainly caused by the demands and multiple needs propitiated by the postmodern Western lifestyle. Its definition is broad, complex and diffuse. It constitutes a state that develops progressively with high levels of stress. In this case, the person assumes too many obligations, losing perspectives on its limitations and as more complications arise, he/she tries to be more productive, expecting for the eventual recognition of society.

Sherlock Holmes presents symptoms of burn-out: he has a bad temper, drinks, smokes and consumes prohibited substances, and in at least two stories from the Holmesian canon (The Adventure of the Devil’s Foot and the Adventure of the Reigate Squire), he is struck down by extreme exhaustion , which forces his doctor and assistant, Dr. Watson, to take him out of London, to rural areas, so that he can rest and recover satisfactorily.

However, why does Sherlock Holmes suffer from burn-out? This syndrome of Sherlock Holmes is persistent and chronic, and is due to his overwork dominated by two ambitious goals that he cannot achieve. So, how did Sherlock Holmes manage to defeat burn-out? The answer is related to his new life after retiring from his thankless and traumatic profession as a private investigator.
