About the work
In 1927, The Strand Magazine, which published the tales of Sherlock Holmes, organized a contest for readers to choose the twelve best stories of the popular detective (excluding the four novels and the last ten stories that were republished in that year 1927). Arthur Conan Doyle, author of Sherlock Holmes, secretly made his list, and the winner of the contest would be the one who matched his selection.
Although the prominent author justified his selection criteria, there are other aspects that influenced his list, standing the following: a) the death and return of Sherlock Holmes, b) the appearance of a powerful rival, Irene Adler, c) the international conflicts, d) Sherlock Holmes’ frustration with the murder of his clients, e) family relationships that are very conflictive due to power, money and the betrayal of relatives and close persons, f) the growing influence of international gangs, which operate in various countries, g) the calligraphy and graphology skills of Sherlock Holmes, and h) the vulnerability of the detective, who suffers from burn-out.
Arthur Conan Doyle’s selection was as follows:
1. The Adventure of the Speckled Band.
2. The Red-Headed League.
3. The Adventure of the Dancing Men.
4. The Final Problem.
5. A Scandal in Bohemia.
6. The Adventure of the Empty House.
7. The Five Orange Pips.
8. The Adventure of the Second Stain.
9. The Adventure of the Devil’s Foot.
10. The Adventure of the Priory School.
11. The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual.
12. The Adventure of the Reigate Squire.
This book compiles these twelve stories with relevant conclusions for each one of them.
