Even though Jodi Goodnight’s uncle was the most famous rancher in Texas, it didn’t save his niece from the law. When she unknowingly pistol-whipped a man who turned out to be the town sheriff, she had to go on the run. She deformed him for life, and he wanted revenge.
Jed Coal and John Noland rode under Quantrill’s Raiders during the Civil War. John, because he was a slave and his owner forced him to take his place in the war. And Jed, who was regular army but was drafted by Quantrill himself due to his marksmanship qualities. Both men chose to do as they said or face a firing squad for disobeying a direct order.
The two ex-raiders and Jodi Goodnight escape and return to their little hideout a couple of days south of the Mexican border. Jodi is already planning their next heist. They planned to rob the casino aboard the Texas Belle, which ran out of Galveston, Texas.
The law wanted the three due to no initial wrongdoing of their own. They got forced into a life of crime, so they believed they might as well act accordingly. They had nothing to lose.
