Synopsis:

Currently 5.1 billion people across the world own a mobile phone. More than half of
them are smartphones. Millions of texts, images and videos circulate daily through
social networks worldwide, from dictatorships to the most consolidated democracies. A
perfect weapon for social organization. The Arab Spring, the Iranian revolution or the
Catalan referendum are examples of social movements organised through social
networks.
But nothing is as good as it seems. When a social movement goes viral, there is so
much information circulating through the internet that it can get difficult to distinguish
between real and false content. This is the perfect storm for fake news to spread
around freely. And what is their purpose? Experts believe that the main goal of fake
news is double: to mess around with public opinion and, specifically when it comes to
politicians, to discredit mass media when these are not working to their advantage.
In some countries, governments are trying to control the internet and social media by
implementing new laws against Freedom of Speech. In countries such Iran or China for
instance, there are people in prison because of their interactions online. But there are
also cases in democratic countries. Julian Assange is, perhaps, the greatest example
of online activism.
The battle to take control of the truth has begun. Are social networks a threat to
democracy and our electoral systems? Are they the new mass media? States start to
fear Freedom of Speech. Freedom which has facilitated the spread of “fake news”
jeopardizing global stability It has been predicted that, by 2022, fake news will
constitute half of the online content. How can influential mainstream media avoid falling
for fake news? How do people manage fake news? Do they detect them? Do they
spread them? How do we fight against them?
