One of the great books of India is the Ramayana, a long poem of more than 24,000 stanzas, which narrates the deeds of Rama.
History tells that the God Brama asked the poet Valmiki to write it, and he did. Rama, married to Sita, is the son of King Dasaratha, and is going to succeed his father, when, due to palace intrigues, he is banished to the jungle, where he is accompanied by his wife and his brother Lakshmana. There, Sita is kidnapped by the demon king and transported to the island of Sri Lanka. Rama allies himself with the monkey army led by Hanuman, they go in search of her and free her.
Faithful Sita and brave Rama return to the palace and ascend the throne. The poem is the most popular book in India, read by children and adults.
The grandeur of the jungle, the terrible beauty of Indian nature, is one of the main literary attractions of The Ramayana.
Rāmāyaṇa, 'Rāma's journey' The name alludes to Rāma, (Rāma literally means 'pleasure') and āyana 'walk'.
