About the work

From the comfortable armchairs of a school library, Pin reveals in his own words the complex internal world of an 18-year-old boy with Down syndrome, a world that is strikingly similar to ours. His dialogue with his tutor, Lalo Macías, which was borne from the sole objective to pass Spanish class, becomes a diary. However, among the moments of intense conversation, emerges the sentiment of love, the pain for not having his feelings reciprocated, as well as disappointment over a reality that tells him: you are not perfect. He realizes that his friendships have become more complicated over time, illustrated by the fact that he and his friends no longer play together as they once did. “We were babies, and we played together, but now almost no one plays anymore; they all have girlfriends and boyfriends, except for me.” Thus, between episodes of sadness, slumped shoulders, discouragement and often frank anger, he tries to find answers: the reason for his syndrome, for which he states, “I don't like my face”; how human relationships work; what to do regarding desire; how to be a good friend; and death: “When I die, what then?” Pin also reveals his clear strategies of perseverance and determination, as well as struggle and effort, to finally establish a posture of powerful resilience. He finds, as essential ingredients, the immense love of his family, the company of good friends who appreciate him, and, without a doubt, the affectionate connection with his tutor, an encounter that is sometimes comical, sometimes interspersed with bouts of screaming or hugs, but that is always well intentioned. Decidedly, Macías goes beyond the professional and educational, raising at all times the maxim that Pin is first a person, and then the rest.
