About the work
A reclusive man who walks with a limp struggles to make ends meet selling coal in small-town Northern Ireland.
When his teenage daughter goes missing, he is forced to stray from his nature and enter a violent, hyper-masculine world in order to find her.
The Coalman is a drama/thriller that critiques the ‘acceptable levels of violence’ in a post-conflict society.
Vigilante fantasies such as Taken and Death Wish have emphasised unrealistic masculine ideals as not only valuable, but somehow necessary in contemporary society.
This film asks how the ‘missing daughter’ trope would play out in reality. We focus on a non-traditionally masculine man to explore the problems that these ideals create, and how they feed into cycles of violence and trauma in Northern Ireland.
