Synopsis:
As she grows up, a little girl (Avelaíña) experiences a series of traumatic events tied to the hardship of life in Galicia in the 19th and 20th century. Every time it happens, she encounters the maragato--a creature from the Galician pagan carnival--in a parallel world that is pitch black and void. The girl's fear transforms into strength when she reaches old age and is able to confront the maragato and be fearless in the face of the brutality in her life to come.
When Avelaíña was little, her mother wore a trisquel around her neck, as a symbol of her celtic roots. She passed it on to Avelaíña before she died, and Avelaíña did the same with her own daughter after becoming fearless in old age.
The traumatic events are as follows:
1. When she's 3 years old, her older brother burns to death while their mother goes for water, after trying to play with a gas light hanging from the ceiling.
2. At 7 years old, Avelaiña's grandfather--her best friend-- hangs himself after hearing that his son will be going to fight the war in Morocco. Before then, we see him teaching her about grape vines, giving her some wine to try in the cellar, and how close they are when they hold hands staring off into the fields.
3. As an adult now, Avelaíña suffers a face paralysis.
4. Avelaíñas husband emigrates after his fishing boat sinks, leaving her alone with her kids.
5. After receiving the trisquel from her, Avelaíñas mother falls from an orange tree while trying to pick the fruits, and dies.
6. Avelaíña's granddaughter is sexually assaulted by a police officer in the middle of the street at night, as she walks home from the bus stop. Avelaíña gives her daughter the trisquel, takes a gun her husband used to use to hunt, and shoots the officer.
