About the work

The two old Indians lay under the Wandering Tree covered in blankets to ward off the cool of the West Texas night, as the orange cinders of a dying campfire glowed across their faces. While they both rested in a deep slumber, Potak’s eyes fluttered while his mind wandered back, and he dreamed of his youth. Way back when he and his cousin, Tuc had been no more than boys. When the Tonkawa tribe still lived together in central Texas. As the wrinkled aging scout’s mind wandered through his past and the spirit world, his pupils flittered restlessly under his eyelids as his thoughts traveled farther and farther into what once was.
Back to a time before the Tonkawa tribe was slaughtered and depopulated by the rival factions of the Comanche, Sage, Shoshone and Kiowa. A time when his family of warriors roamed free and lived and ruled across this land. But all that had long ago changed with the Tonkawa Massacres—driving young boys like Tuc and Potak to seek a new way of life, different than the one they had been taught. A new life where they could still use their skills while making a meager living and at the same time, taking restitution on the tribes that had decimated their numbers into near extinction.
