About the work

1930. Harlem, New York. After the madness and licentiousness of the ‘Happy 1920s’, the 1929 crisis strikes, putting an end to a decade of abundance. Society is not going through its best moments, but soon finds an escape route.

Cheerful, fun and cool, swing is an effective antidote for coping with depression. And if you are into dancing, there is no better place in the whole of New York than Savoy Ballroom, the “Home for Happy Feet.” Run by Moe Gale, its dancing floor is the only place where african americans reign…

There is a party every night at Savoy. Revelers join playing and dancing competitions to be the best. Regulards include youngsters who will later become legends – Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Glen Miller and the great Frankie Mannie, all dancing to the tunes of Lindy, Hop, Charleston and Balboa, with son rythm played by the best New York bands, like Chick Webb Orchestra, the resident Savoy Band, and Ella Fitzgerald Band.

Young, good-looking, and talented, they all shared a passion for dancing, which is said to cure sadness. Savoy is a place where emotions like jealousy, envy, betrayal, friendship, love and the desire to succeed spring and mix up.
