The harbor police had been alerted by all this commotion, and after a few minutes the shrill siren noises were heard. All the bandits disappeared as if by magic; fled in terror, set foot in the dust, but Josiane tied the man at the foot of the stairs with the elastic ropes and called her uncles who were waiting for her in the other room of the landing.
