A light in the dark

About the work

Alternative title: Abortion in the Dominican Republic

Year: 2016

Duration: 25m

Director: Helena Martínez de Aspe

Countries: Dominican Republic, United Kingdom

Producer: Helena Martínez de Aspe

Synopsis:

For the first time, a documentary gives a general and different view of the abortion in one of the few countries in the world where the practice is completely illegal, the Dominican Republic.
Doctors, lawyers, women’s organizations as well as representatives of the Catholic and Evangelical Church speak openly about the social situation and Dominican politics.
With a close and direct pitch, highlighting the contrast between the beauty of the country and the rawness of the subject, the documentary focuses on several personal stories: a teenager that used abortion pills, a herbs seller that explains how to make a traditional abortifacient tea and a mother who tells how her daughter, underage and pregnant, died in a hospital after the doctors refused to treat her leukaemia.
Abortion is a taboo subject in most of the world. And when religion, patriarchal society, lack of sex education and one of the strictest laws on the subject are combined, the result is a highly-maternal mortality.
The documentary plumbs the different aspects of the Dominican reality, their physical implications and the country’s political, legal, social and religious dimensions.
