SYNOPSIS
Europe 2029. Totally devastated by continuous pandemics and wars. There is a shortage of food and drinking water. Governed by large corporations, that are depriving popula- tion’s freedom, restricting their mobility and birth rate.
Seven desperate Europeans try to enter in Africa illegally, inside a container, in search of freedom and a better life. What they did not imagine was that this dream would become their worst nightmare.
The spirit of an Arab boy, who was also an immigrant but in the opposite direction, is also inside, telling his story. A story that we Europeans never believed we would have to live.
SUMMARY
Three intertwined stories are told in different temporal spaces. On one hand, Nabyl’s journey in search of a better life in Europe. On the other hand, the lives of the different characters before entering the container, how each one experienced the post-war pe- riod and the reason for their escape. Finally, the desperate journey of seven Europeans inside a container, in order to reach Africa in search of freedom.
Nabyl’s journey
We deal with the drama of immigration, recounting the hardships and difficulties that Nabyl encounters searching his dream. He has to build a raft with other immigrants, who will travel crammed into it in the middle of the night. Most of them do not know how to swim, and terror overtakes them. A storm forces them to return and many drown, in- cluding Nabyl’s close friend. This fact will tortur him for the rest of his life. He will cross
a desert with almost no water or food, leaving behind multitudes of corpses and strug- gling to survive. He will work from sunrise to sunset to raise some money with which he can pay for a false passport. He will be witness about how mafias and law enforcement take advantage of the misfortune of immigrants, stealing what they have and treating them like animals. He will be in the container trying to arrive to Europe, but he will never achieve.
The search for freedom
The story of Isabelle, committed to freedom and justice, and how she leads one of the dissident groups. Her past as Minister of Health and as a volunteer in a field hospital in Africa with her son, with a tragic end. Help the Father with the orphaned children, provi- ding them food and medical supplies, and the clandestine clinics that help with illegal births, finding safe locations outside of government control. For that reasons she is the victim of a conspiracy to discredit her by one of the corporations where Miguel works, which is in charge of spreading false news about her. Isabelle takes in charge of the care of Léa, seriously ill, whom she adopts as if she were his daughter. They all have a reason to escape: Chiara wants to be a mother, Adam needs a heart to survive, the rest are per- secuted by corporations... and James is following orders from the army.
The container
The journey of the seven characters inside a wrought iron container, with almost no wa- ter or food, for weeks, and how they become totally desperates. What at first was going to be a journey towards freedom, becomes a journey towards the darkest part of the human being: fights to drink from puddles, reproachs, withdrawal syndrome, attempted rape, sleeping gas, murder, heart attack, suicide, betrayal... Death spreads into the con- tainer and only the presence of Nabyl’s spirit and Léa’s innocence makes us believe that there is still hope. The ending is devastating and shocking. There was never any inten- tion that they would come out of the container. They had other plans for them...
