Relato en primera persona en el que un profesor de jazz, que disfruta tocar solo y vivir el silencio y el sonido casi como un sueño, es interrumpido por un alumno que apenas asiste a clase y que dice no creer en la práctica musical. A partir de ahí se desencadena un diálogo tenso y irónico sobre la personalidad, el sonido propio, el papel de la técnica y el gusto del profesor, a quien el estudiante acusa de imponer un modelo hegemónico de “buen sonido” y de uniformar a los músicos. El alumno reivindica que el jazz es libertad, filosofía y búsqueda personal, y critica que se haya convertido en un estándar uniforme y en reflejo de una sociedad marcada por una “falsa libertad”. El cuento se cierra cuando entra otro alumno, muy aplicado, y el profesor, todavía impactado por la conversación, le pregunta directamente qué es para él la libertad, dejando abierta la reflexión sobre el sentido de la libertad artística y personal.
