En el Valle del Guajuco, al norte de la Nueva España, existe una creencia ancestral. «Es una promesa de amor perpetuo, cuando una dama da su pañuelo a un caballero.» Un dulce incidente es la causa por la que Rosario, desconociendo esta creencia, da su pañuelo al Capitán Joaquín y cambia su destino. Rosario es obligada a contraer matrimonio, recibiendo un cruel castigo al oponerse. En cambio, Joaquín, acepta la orden de su padre de contraer matrimonio, persuadido por la promesa de su amante de seguir viéndose. Joaquín, sin saber qué llevó a Rosario a aceptar el matrimonio, la trata con dureza y la acusa de ambiciosa. Ella, decepcionada, comienza a temer que su vida de maltratos continuará. Con el tiempo, en Joaquín va creciendo la atracción por Rosario, y cuando descubre su triste pasado, trata de que vuelva a ser la dulce joven que conoció y le dio su Amor en Prenda, pero una tragedia los envuelve y la culpa los separa. ¿Podrán recuperar el amor que iniciaba? ¿Podrán ser felices tras sufrir la tragedia?

Alonso es un exitoso escritor que vive de las apariencias. Su hija de 6 años se enferma de leucemia y su esposa Ximena descubre que no tienen seguro médico. Además contará con la ayuda de Lucía, una exitosa periodista que quiere dar un giro a su carrera.
