This article is about the life and, especially, the captivity and death of this Augustinian recollect martyr, Fray León de San José1. Born in Peraleda de la Mata, Spain, he was captured and cruelly killed by Moro pirates in Mindanao, Philippines, in 1740, while on missionary duties. We try to reconstruct the way these events developed as faithfully as possible by putting all the available sources and versions together. We also provide an ample historical context to understand the state of affairs and the way things worked in the Philippines at that time, so we can make sense of the facts. The ultimate purpose of this study is to pay homage to this impressive missionary as well as to lay the ground for his birthplace parish to advance his cause for canonization.
