I Congreso Internacional de Neuropsicología en Internet UNINET, UNION`99, 1999. El procesamiento musical a nivel cortical ha cobrado un renovado interés entre estudiosos e investigadores del cerebro durante las últimas dos décadas. El procesamiento lingüístico, en cambio, cuenta ya con un extenso cuerpo de datos y teorías desde los años 50. Se ha intentado repetidamente relacionar estos dos procesos en tanto modalidades comunicativas que utilizan un mismo canal sensorial (la audición) y acaso por los mismos (o similares) mecanismos y substratos neurales. Así, es frecuente encontrar textos que atribuyen la función musical al hemisferio derecho del mismo modo (y de forma complementaria) que la lingüística es patrimonio del hemisferio izquierdo. Sin embargo, este tipo de afirmaciones no se desprenden del cuerpo de datos que poseemos en el momento actual acerca del procesamiento musical cerebral, dado que los músicos expertos utilizan su hemisferio izquierdo como gestor principal y que los casos de amusia informados tampoco permiten realizar tales generalizaciones.
