BIRDS IN MUSIC – a walk with Janequin, Stravinsky and Messiaen
07/03/2012
Edson Zampronha
Throughout history composers have found in birds the music they wished to create. It is impressive the amount of birds you can indentify in so different periods, including even the most extreme contemporary ones!  On last Wednesday (March 14) I gave the lecture “Birds in Music – a walk with Janequin, Stravinsky and Messiaen” at the Oviedo Higher Conservatory of Music, Spain, and in this lecture I outlined the way birds appear in music. I could identify three main strategies. The names I gave t

The Advanced Music of Edson Zampronha in Antro Positivo
07/03/2012
Edson Zampronha
The magazine Antro Positivo, Edition 02, dedicates one of its sections to the work of Edson Zampronha. (Antro Positivo, published 16/04/2012 on pages 14-15). It includes a link to the work Modelagem X-a, for vibraphone, performed by Augusto Moralez. This is a very good example of what I call Advanced Music. It also includes a short text by Adolfo Núñez, dean of LIEM-CDMC at the Reina Sofía Museum (Madrid, Spain), about the music of Zampronha.  As the text of Adolfo Núñez is published in Portugu

A performer’s approach to Recycling Collaging Sampling
07/03/2012
Edson Zampronha
Daniel Serale is a great percussionist, and he wrote a very good paper on Recycling Collaging Sampling which is worth reading indeed. Serale  analyzes the collaborative interaction between composer and performer to generate a musical work, focusing on guided improvisations. He concentrates his analysis on the work  Recycling Collaging Sampling,  a composition of Edson Zampronha for percussion and electroacoustic.  The paper's title is   Recycling and Collaging: the roles of composer and the pe

Edson Zampronha
On May 9 th 2012 Duplum was premiered in Spain and the composition of this work is very interesting indeed. The premiere was at the Centro de Cultura Antiguo Instituto (Gijón, Spain), by the Tuba Ensemble of the Higher Conservatory of Music of Oviedo (Spain). It was a great performance including 2 tubas, 1 euphonium, 1 piano and electroacoustics that I performed live. I first created the electroacustics for the work Justo antes de los bosques (Just in front the forest), a performance that blend

Advanced Music inside a swimming pool!
07/03/2012
Edson Zampronha
A stage is not neutral regarding music: a rich dialogue can emerge between performances and stages. In this post I concentrate my comments on one specific case in which a stage becomes a key part of a performance. Justo antes de los Bosques (Just next to the Forest - see a promotional video here) was performed inside an Olympic swimming pool during the CENT 2012 (Cisterniga New Trends in Performing Arts) in the city of La Cisterniga (Spain), on May 16, 2012 (9pm). This is a performance of Teatr

Acqua alle corde! (Water to the strings!) is a 16thCentury expression which refers to a courage and greatness of spirit that someone shows in the face of an extreme difficult situation, even when his/her own life is exposed to a significant risk. Edson Zampronha wrote Acqua alle Corde! to the cellist Trino Zurita, who is premiering it at the Ateneo Barcelonés (in Barcelona, Spain) next June 08, 2012 (8:00 pm), as part of the "Concerts-Phonos 2011-2012". Could we ground a musical system on qualities of feeling? Could we use qualities of feeling as a ground for a compositional method? How to deal with qualities of feeling expanding them, instead of going back to subjective, coded emotions or banal clichés? De Produndis is one of the works in which  Edson Zampronha  first tried to answer to these issues. This work is being performed by the excellent Brazilian choir Camerata in Fuga and Thiago Cazarim (piano) in a series of  really consistent, con

Unfolding music into space!
07/03/2012
Edson Zampronha
How is possible to unfold music into space? Is it possible to unfold musical syntax, musical texture of even musical signification into space for the construction of an innovative musical work? Zampronha wrote a new paper called Musica desplegada en el espacio (“Music unfold into space”) in which he develops some ideas about this unfolding and shows three concrete examples of that. This paper is published by Espacio Sonoro review (nº 27, June 2012) and it can be read online! And it’s free! Click
