BARON KRIMINEL
10/30/2025
Jose Luis Azcarreta García
Fran Delaney, a homicide detective from Chicago scarred by the death of his daughter, arrives in New Orleans hoping for a fresh start. But the city—with its humid heat, mist-shrouded alleys, and ancestral shadows—soon shows him that no one can escape the past. When the lifeless body of a boy is found in the courtyard of an orphanage, with no visible signs of violence, Fran is assigned to the case alongside Celeste, a Creole detective who does not rule out the involvement of supernatural forces. The investigation darkens when two of the three children who practiced voodoo against the boy die in an atrocious way. Although Fran distrusts any “mystical” explanation, the clues point again and again toward voodoo and the name that everyone in the poorer neighbourhoods whispers in fear: Baron Kriminel, the spirit of vengeance and violent death. But the deeper they venture into the spiritual heart of New Orleans—through hidden altars, swamps, and mambo huts—the thinner the line becomes between reality and the supernatural. The relationship between Fran and Celeste grows deep and ambiguous: she, a believer in the invisible forces that rule the city; he, a sceptic, but increasingly haunted by visions and guilt. To save the life of Grace, the surviving girl who is later adopted by Fran, he is forced to do the unthinkable: turn to a voodoo priestess to contact Baron Kriminel directly. The price will be his own life. Fran drinks a potion that brings him to the brink of death. In a trance, he offers his soul in exchange for the girl’s. The Baron accepts the bargain but warns that the evil is not yet over: the girl has been abducted. The investigation culminates at a pig farm on the outskirts of the city, where they discover the man behind the disappearances—a butcher who performed macabre rituals on the children. Fran, consumed by rage, executes him in cold blood. Celeste, horrified, confronts him: in his thirst for justice, Fran has become what he swore to destroy. After saving Grace, Fran leaves the police force and departs New Orleans with the girl, seeking redemption elsewhere. Celeste, meanwhile, continues her life in the city, aware that the presence of the Baron never truly fades. Finally, a new victim appears, and the statue of Baron Kriminel looms over the cemetery as a brass band escorts the coffin of the latest victim, the Baron’s bronze smile watching the living in silence.
