En las siguientes páginas, se presenta el Trabajo Final de Grado que corresponde al Grado de Comunicación Audiovisual, que se inscribe, a su vez, a las líneas de investigación específicas del Grupo Lic de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid: “Análisis de las dietas culturales y las culturas mediáticas y formación del imaginario social y personal” y “Transformación de los marcos culturales de desarrollo y de su impacto en el desarrollo de la infancia y la juventud”. Éste, llevará como objeto de estudio específico el fenómeno de West Side Story en España, como prototipo de musical y de producto cultural de consumo de masas, distribuido y adaptado, además, en dos industrias culturales de peso: el cine y las artes escénicas. El presente trabajo acoge, en líneas generales, el género de los musicales como elemento clave del permanente diálogo entre ambas disciplinas artísticas que permite la generación contínua e infinita de éxitos y beneficios económicos, conservando el mismo trasfondo narrativo. El musical como género, construido históricamente en el ámbito angloamericano, constituye un paradigma de la explotación de productos dentro de las industrias culturales que denominaron Theodor W. Adorno y Max Horkheimer en su destacado trabajo Dialécticas de la Ilustración (1944). Junto a las competencias adquiridas durante los años del grado, este trabajo se desarrollará también a partir de nuevas fuentes consultadas que añadirán valor a los resultados de este estudio, el cual pretende realizar un acercamiento a las causas y circunstancias que se han desarrollado durante los siglos XIX y XX para desembocar en el éxito indiscutible que tienen los productos teatrales de esta industria a nivel mundial. Por supuesto, como cuna y epicentro de la industria del teatro musical en España, Madrid será, como ciudad, el foco de investigación, pues, la Gran Vía, gracias a la implantación de este producto cultural, se ha convertido en un fenómeno social, conocido como “el Broadway español”.
