About the work
(Verse 1)
I held the blueprint in my steady hands
A life designed on careful, drafted plans
But in the margins of the page, I strayed
In pen and ink, the reckless marks I made
A miscalculation here, a shortcut there
Built a house of cards on a foundation made of air
Now the columns crack, the angles are all wrong
To a silent, waiting, empty-hearted song
(Chorus)
And they’re the footnotes of my faults, in tiny, fading type
The asterisks of agony that haunt me in the night
Every "should have been" and "could have been" that time can’t reconcile
The errata of my soul, stretching on for mile on mile
Oh, the footnotes of my faults, they tell the truer tale
Of the perfect, pristine story that I managed to derail
(Verse 2)
I thought the formula was plain for me to see
Just add ambition, subtract uncertainty
But I forgot to carry over one small truth
And it subtracted all the wisdom of my youth
The variables of love, I solved them wrong
Turned a major chord into a minor, mournful song
Now the equation ends with a remainder left of "why?"
A problem I can’t solve, beneath a vacant sky
(Bridge)
So here’s the second edition, with the corrections underlined
But you can’t print a new beginning for a life you’ve left behind
The ink is permanent, the binding’s set and worn
A testament to how a better tale was torn...
Torn from the spine.
(Outro)
Just footnotes, footnotes, crowded at the bottom of the page
A catalog of errors with my name upon the cage
And every star that marks them in the index of my years
Just leads me back to all the blame, and all these unshed tears...
The footnotes of my faults.
