About the work
This invention discloses a novel, sustainable coating process for two-dimensional cellulosic substrates, such as textiles and paper. The coating is a hybrid metamaterial comprising a soft, flexible xerogel inner layer and a hard, protective geopolymer outer layer. This unique “sandwich” structure provides exceptional durability against washing, abrasion, UV light, chemicals, and high temperatures (up to 1000°C), while also being flame-retardant.
