About the work
The sea was breathing slow that night
Like glass stretched over bones
He slept inside the color blue
A crown of foam and stones
I sang to him in lowercase
Soft as a coastal hymn
The ocean held its mouth shut tight
And let us in
The tide began to lean his way
The wind learned how to stare
The stars unbuttoned one by one
And left him bare
I sang a black salt lullaby
To keep the waters still
He smiled like men who think they’ve taught
The dark to kneel
He said the sea remembers love
He said it knows my name
I believed him like the quiet does
Before the rain
The waves grew teeth, the sky went black
The moon cracked like a plate
The ocean rose on broken legs
And changed its face
He tied himself to thunder now
With rope and borrowed breath
I felt the storm inside his chest
Practicing death
The compass screamed, the mast confessed
The night began to roar
The sea no longer wanted him
It wanted more
I screamed a black salt lullaby
But it split the air in two
The ocean tore him from my arms
Like gods will do
He fought the waves like scripture fights
A mouthful of blood and prayer
But the sea doesn’t crown its heroes
It just leaves them there
The storm wore him like holy war
Shook every sacred bone
He cursed the water, kissed the bottle
And called it home
The lightning wrote his final name
Across a burning sky
The sea walked out of him that night
And let him die
Now I sing a black salt lullaby
In bars where sailors drown
He drinks to hear the ocean back
But it won’t come down
He once stood taller than the storm
With heaven in his grip
Now the bottle is his only sea
And he’s a sinking ship
The sea is calm again tonight
Like nothing ever bled
But he’s still fighting waves inside
His head
