This essay provides a philosophical analysis of the concept ‘merit’, taking into consideration the deterministic aspect of human behaviour. A new concept is proposed –the Creative Ethical Volition- which, if accepted, defends an internal realm of freedom from the determinist challenge, and justifies a new understanding of merit.
