OBS — Original Book Soundtrack Concept Definition and Artistic Format Description OBS (Original Book Soundtrack) is a conceptual multimedia art format in which an original musical album is created directly from a literary work, without the existence or necessity of a film adaptation. Unlike a traditional OST (Original Soundtrack), which accompanies a specific film production and forms an inseparable component of that single audiovisual work, OBS exists independently from any definitive visual adaptation. An OST belongs to a particular cinematic interpretation created and owned as part of a specific film production. OBS operates according to a fundamentally different artistic principle. OBS relates to literature in the same way that illustration relates to books: a literary work may receive multiple visual interpretations by different artists across different editions, while remaining the same literary text. Likewise, a single literary work may inspire multiple independent OBS interpretations created by different composers, musicians, sound designers or multimedia artists. Each OBS represents a unique “musical illustration” of the same literary universe rather than an official or exclusive soundtrack bound to one adaptation. Thus, OBS is not: * a subordinate element of cinema, * a fixed canonical soundtrack, * or a single definitive musical version of a literary work. Instead, OBS is an open interpretive artistic format allowing multiple parallel sonic interpretations of the same book. In the OBS format, music functions as: * an independent artistic interpretation of literature; * an atmospheric extension of the fictional universe; * a sonic worldbuilding system; * a parallel emotional layer accompanying reading or audiobook experience. An OBS project may include: * a full conceptual music album; * chapter transition compositions for audiobooks; * thematic instrumental suites; * ambient and orchestral interpretations of literary scenes; * AI-assisted or traditionally composed soundtrack works; * accompanying visual illustrations and conceptual artwork. The OBS format is designed specifically for literary immersion and differs fundamentally from: * film scores, * video game soundtracks, * musical adaptations, * radio drama music, * conventional background music. Core principles of OBS: 1. Literature-first creation process The soundtrack originates directly from the literary text itself rather than from cinematic adaptation. 2. Independent musical existence The music must function both as accompaniment to the book and as a standalone conceptual album. 3. Atmosphere over synchronization OBS is not required to synchronize with visual editing or cinematic timing. Its purpose is emotional, philosophical and atmospheric interpretation. 4. Multiple interpretive coexistence Different OBS projects may coexist for the same literary work, just as multiple illustrators may create different visual interpretations of the same book. 5. Sonic worldbuilding Music is used to construct the psychological, cultural and environmental identity of fictional worlds. 6. Reader-generated cinema OBS encourages the listener or reader to generate internal cinematic imagination through the interaction of literature, sound and visual atmosphere. 7. Multimedia literary experience OBS may combine: * audiobook, * soundtrack album, * AI-generated illustrations, * conceptual design, * immersive audio aesthetics, into a unified literary-artistic experience. The OBS format is particularly suited for: * science fiction, * philosophical fiction, * fantasy, * cosmic and atmospheric literature, * conceptual narrative projects. The term OBS (“Original Book Soundtrack”) designates both: * the artistic format itself, and * musical works created according to this concept.
